Overview

Project

This project aimed to study the effect on motivation of using assessment material in the form of a competition, which will follow a brief agreed and set by employers and college staff. The assessment brief was delivered to two groups of students on the second year of a BTEC Level 3 course in IT.

  Project Life Cycle

Findings

The sample group was small, consisting of the whole population of two groups of second year BTEC IT students. Results, therefore cannot be reliably extrapolated across all IT students. However, the findings give an insight into the value of involving people from industry in a student project in terms of motivation and the value students place on this involvement.

All students who had persistently missed deadlines met at least one deadline for this project and there was an improvement in rating of 2.86 (57%) on average hand-in rates.

All students who consistently met deadlines did meet all deadlines for this assignment.

There was an increase in the number of students who met the pass criteria for this assignment on first submission.

At least 70% of students valued the style of the assessment, in terms of the involvement of people from industry and the real client, feeling that it helped them to achieve work of a quality that was higher than they otherwise would have been able to achieve.

I felt that the Wordpress clinic exercise was a very productive one! I could sense that most of the students were excited to be able to get on with stuff and enjoying creating their websites. From both sessions I came away feeling excited that I had been part of a group of people that were being creative and improving their skill sets which was immensely satisfying.

From some of the students I still felt a sense of frustration at not being able to move forward as fast as they wanted to and a lack of drive to search for a solution on the web for themselves but instead expected a solution from one of us. I would like to encourage them to try lots of different themes and plugins and to get a sense of the variety that is available with them and to find out what works for them.

I was impressed at the level of enthusiasm for the subject from most of the students and their ability to grasp Wordpress and web development in general.

I got great experience in teaching what I know to other people. It took me out of my comfort zone as I was required to know the subject being discussed and to come up with information quickly. I also enjoyed the challenge of encouraging different types of students to find solutions to problems themselves and it was very satisfying when they were able to do this.

I would like to improve how I encourage students to learn for themselves as I think that this is one of the main things that the students would benefit from as I think that there is a slight lack of patience and confidence from them that I would like to help them improve on. I do not have the answer to this at the moment but with my current level of experience it would require me to try different things out and test the results.

Thank you again for inviting me to do this. I very much enjoyed it and hope that the students got as much from it as I did!

How do you feel that the session benefited the students? Hopefully it gave them a better understanding of how the industry works.

What was the impact on you? It helped me appreciate how tricky some concepts may be to novices.

How could it be improved? By having more sessions.

Do you think it is important for students to work with someone like you who can bring ideas and examples from the industry to their field of experience? I believe so.

I would really appreciate any short, honest feedback you can give. I think more emphasis should be given on the importance of information architecture, user experience and coding skills instead of purely design.
